Everything turned out exactly the way I had hoped -- this food will be awesome. They did a great job implementing the Indian recipes we gave them, and they came up with some awesome options for the non-Indian half of the menu too. I may have explained this already, but since some of F's family is uncomfortable with non-Indian food -- possibly because they suspect it'll have stealth meat -- and some of my family is uncomfortable with Indian food -- probably because it has not-at-all stealthy spices -- we're offering a mix of styles. There's a fairly traditional Indian entree and a non-Indian entree that will be more familiar to the non-Indian folks (we're thinking something kind of Cuban-ish, with black beans and pico de gallo and stuff). The appetizers split up the same way, and so does the lunchtime buffet we're having at the ceremony. People who want to try both are welcome to, but I think this menu will have something for everyone.

....at least, everyone who likes vegetables. My mom is still concerned that some people will be put off by the all-vegetarian menu, but I think they'll be pleasantly surprised. I bet that if we didn't mention it many people wouldn't notice. To me, it's like worrying that there won't be any hot chocolate at your pool party. Apparently, after tasting the wedding food, my dad said "Wow, I'm really full! I didn't know vegetarian food could be so good!" That's my goal for everybody.

What to do...patta

I've been thinking about how to wear my dupatta and I'm pretty sure I've got it figured out. This can take a long time, so I was thinking of things that might make it a bit more fun, and help us get cooler pictures. I brought this question up to F., and we thought of providing some props for fun posing:

A picture frame
Cowboy hats
Turbans
Space helmets
Giant foam Illini fingers
Feather boas
A multicolored dupatta
Something Chicago-themed -- what is Chicago-themed? I like this idea! The flowers in this photo are not the right color and the cakes will probably not be white, but the cakes I imagine would look something like this:

What I like most about this plan is that we can have a few different flavors, so everyone with different dietary needs will be happy. The folks on my mom's side who have gluten allergies can get a gluten-free cake (flourless chocolate, maybe?) and we can also have a vegan cake to satisfy the vegans and the folks on F's side who don't eat eggs. And then we can have a third kind of cake that's just cake.

I have also found out that it's easy to come up with DIY cake stands. That bumps this idea out of the "maybe" column and into the "hell yes we're doing it" column.

We started talking with our contact at the venue about setting up a tasting in February. The ideas we've got for the wedding menu sound absolutely delicious, the decorations will be beautiful, and everyone will be very happy.

coordinated-but-not-matching bridesmaids

I have this plan where my bridesmaids' clothes are coordinated with each other but they don't match. Explaining this idea to people has been difficult, though. Now, after months of waiting, I present for your viewing pleasure: Bridesmaids That Coordinate But Don't Match!

At the ceremony (the bride is in the center):

At the reception (once again the bride in the middle):

For both of these, I tried to pick a style of embellishment and a family of colors that would coordinate well. The top set has more traditional-feeling style elements (zardosi and kundan work, contrasting borders). Most of the outfits have some amount of orange or turquoise in them. For the bottom set I chose mostly single-color outfits that had sheer fabric. Those all happened to have metallic, swirly embellishment. The similarity in style gave me freedom to choose a wider range of colors. FYI, I don't have 10 bridesmaids. I'm just trying to show a lot of options.

everything's coming up Milhouse

F. and I have been in Chicago since Thursday. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding (he also came to it, of course). That kept us busy until Saturday night, but on Sunday my parents visited. F. and his mom and my parents and I spent the day working on wedding stuff, and we got a lot done! I had been starting to wonder if we ever would, so I'm glad we did all this.
F's mom had collected a stack of Indian-style invitations. We looked through them and picked out a couple whose styles we like. My plan is to take those, and some more American-style samples that I liked, with us to India. We'll try to get something between the two styles. That means we need to have all our invitation wording written up before we go. We've got to write the program, too.

We drove out to our ceremony and reception venue to meet with one of their event managers. We talked with her about the schedule on the actual day as well as what kind of a planning schedule we should follow. This was the first time any of the parents had seen the place, and they really liked it. The last time F. and I had been there was in the middle of November. This time we got a chance to check out the garden, too. It looked great! There's a plaza that will be a perfect place to set up the mandap.

Next we checked out some locations for the mehndi party, which my mom is in charge of. Looks like we'll have mine done Friday night (since it will take so long) and the guests can have mehndi done at the actual mehndi party on Saturday at brunchtime. This way I can even do some of it, which will be really fun. There should be time for it to dry before the garba starts Saturday night.

My mom surprised me by saying she was thinking of wearing Indian clothes at the ceremony. This will be so fun! We went back to F's parents' house for dinner, then the moms and I went upstairs to play dress-up. My mom will probably wear a lehenga choli, since she doesn't like the way sari pleats lay on her. Now I'm going to start sending her links so she can check out styles! I'll have to pick out her outfit when F's family and I are in India. What a big responsibility, picking out my mom's clothes.

We also talked with a decorator about the mandap. He showed us all the ugly plastic white ones with lights all over them first, saving the cool wooden one for last. I was starting to get worried, and then he pulled up a photo of it. Its pillars look like peacocks! It's shaped like a clover leaf! I liked it a lot. Just in case the quote's not in our price range, we're going to look for one or two other decorators to compare against. But if we're happy with the price, we'll probably go with this guy.

That was everything we could fit in one day. My parents are driving back to Michigan this morning and I'm taking the train to Champaign for a conference tonight.

So, the next few steps are:

Finish the guest list.

Get a visa for the India trip.

Email the venue and let them know we want to have the ceremony on that round plaza.

Email our awesome photographer and let her know the date so we can schedule things.

Buy a printer with which to make save-the-date cards. (We figure that since F. works from home, and we'll probably need to print a ton of wedding stuff, it is worth it to just buy one.) Make save-the-date cards.

Decide about the decorator. Put the decorator in touch with the venue so we can decide about hanging things from the ceiling.

Take care of little things like a guest book, place cards, a box to put cards in, and all those other details my mom wrote down while we were meeting at the venue. See if we can rent vases from either the venue or the decorator and just put our own flowers in them.

I'm sure there are more things on this list, but that's most of what I can think of that needs to (or can) be done before we leave for India.

wish fulfillment much?

Last night I had a dream that I went shopping and bought a wedding outfit --- and cycling shoes. We also went back and forth a lot and decided to have it in the Chicago area. Sure, I'm not in Chicago, but I explained to F's mom how important it is to me to get to plan this, and I think she got it. We worked out some ideas about how to go about things logistically (for instance, they'll get a whole lot of pandits, and we'll phone interview them) that make me pretty comfortable with the plan. Having his family nearby does make some things easier, too: I'd been looking at getting wholesale flowers (like from fiftyflowers.com or something) and arranging them ourselves, and if there are a lot of family people around that will be a lot easier.

I just ordered some sample invitations from Saima Says Design. F. and I looked at some last night, but he doesn't know I have ordered samples. It'll be a nice surprise for him when they arrive. It makes the whole thing seem like it's finally getting started!

F. and I also agreed on what colors to use for decorating (red and orange). I found a photo of a mandap that I really like, too. It's so graceful. Imagine this kind of frame with orange, red, and white flowers & fabric.

photo mentality

I've got a problem with the institution of wedding photography. I certainly don't object to having photos taken -- one might want to have something to look at and remember one's wedding, sure. People who weren't there might want something to feel like they were involved. Parents might want a little keepsake. Great! But more and more, I feel like people focus more on the photos than on the wedding itself.

Examples (real life people's internet stories, edited and paraphrased and all that):

A bride's mom pays to have bridesmaids' tattoos airbrushed out of the photos.

Brides with non-traditional hair colors get comments that it will "ruin the pictures."

A woman wants her bridesmaids to wear a temporary tattoo, but worries that it's overbearing to request that they change how they look (what if people think it's a real one?). Commenter suggests "have a picture taken of them all putting the tattoos on to show they just did it to support your wedding" -- what, is it not official if it's not in a photo?

Bridal makeup is always heavier than day-to-day makeup, because it has to show up well in pictures. Even if it makes the poor girl look really weird to the people who are actually attending the wedding.

It's not photography that makes you married, people! Maybe it's the magazine-ization of weddings that leads to this kind of attitude. These days, weddings are something that people consume as photos in magazines far more often than they get married themselves or even attend the weddings of others. What they see is the pictures. In that sense, is a wedding really an event and a party where two people celebrate their commitment with the people they care about? Or is it one really long and extra-fun photo shoot?

everyone else is doing it

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 304px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CCpx9L1Kz5E/SZ1z5PHCODI/AAAAAAAACDc/wMBYNLYcbt4/s400/weddingoutfitplan_smaller.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304523363258087474" />
Apparently when ladies on the internet are planning their weddings, they make things called "inspiration boards" to show the concept of what they want stuff to look like -- I've seen general, whole-wedding ones as well as very specific just-centerpieces ones. I've found a few possible venues in the Boston area, but basically can't accomplish much else on that front until we get there. All I have left to do is look at pretty stuff, so: behold! Styles and ideas for my wedding outfit. (I haven't decided about all red vs. red-and-white, but I have decided I like contrast-color borders and zari/zardosi work, and I hate overuse of sequins.)

Also: I used to like the sparse, Arabic-style mehndi more but now that I've had it a couple of times I think I prefer the dense Indian style. I don't think I will need to buy jewelry (I believe I can borrow F's mom's), but out of what's available to me I am going to go for gorgeous-but-simple (the ceremony will be in the daytime in the summer, I don't want to be armor-plated). I am not sure if I'll wear the dupatta on my head or not -- if I do, that will obviously change my hair options. But I love the 'do in the upper right. If you zoom in you can see her little braids. So awesome!

Location, location, location

We're planning on having the wedding about a year and a half from now, and we had been planning on having it in Chicago. My dad cracked jokes during the pooja and flinched when the priest threw rice at him. My mom learned which finger to do tika with and our legs fell asleep from sitting on the floor sideways. F's parents marched me and F around and introduced us to all the old friends they'd invited and we got a ton of hugs. Everyone danced -- my dad, with his bad hip, even did the "lightbulb" for a little bit. The DJ announced that it was the last song, then played three more. Our photographer made us look awesome (pictures soon). My youngest cousin made up a song about F's name.

Afterward, F and I went to the hotel my family was staying at to spend more time with them. I changed into a t-shirt but the only comfortable pants I had were poofy salwar pants. Everyone was kind of jealous of my pants, actually, because they were super comfortable. We ate lots of pizza and all our friends tried on our sparkly engagement clothes.

Now we can actually plan the wedding! I might have found the perfect place, and it seems like F's parents might go for it even though it's a little smaller than we initially thought the wedding would be. I think this place's capacity is the perfect size - more than that and we wouldn't be able to afford some of the cool stuff we'd like to do, less than that and F's parents would be sad about all the people they couldn't invite.

check this out

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CCpx9L1Kz5E/SRxEP3xbMzI/AAAAAAAAB1Y/vur2I3cJB0g/s400/IMG_0600.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268160703576617778" />

I am so excited to get to wear mine!

no pictures

F's ring was finished this weekend, so we went to see it. We also checked out the stones for my ring, which had finally arrived. It's going to be close whether they'll finish mine in time for the engagement, but I really hope they will. F was sweet about it and didn't want to take his ring home until mine was done too. Aww. But that means I don't have a picture of how awesome it looks.

Another thing I have not seen yet is the outfit I'm wearing at the engagement. I described something I would like, and we had an aunt in India go buy it for us. It's a great plan, but I am so impatient to see how it turned out! It apparently arrived at F's parents' house a while ago, but I haven't been to visit them in a couple of weeks so I still haven't seen it. Excitement!

There are some ridiculously awesome clothes on bargello.com. If I had more money I'd be buying them all up. Soon, I will be the stylish aunt! Muhuhahahahaha! I don't just need Indian party clothes either. I need things to wear in general. I used to have so many pretty shirts -- how has it come to this?

There's a place that might be exactly what I want for the wedding. The problem is, it doesn't hold as many people as F's mom wants it to. (It holds as many as I think it needs to, but not if F actually has 300 Very Close Family Members Who Absolutely Must Be Invited.) F and I are still going to check it out this weekend, and if it is really cool we'll have to do some guest list negotiating.

bangle update

Good news: I bought some bangles online and it turns out that size 2.10 (usually called L or XL) fits me. They will be ready around the end of October, sounds like.

Lilliputians + me

F's family wants to help me find matching jewelry for the wedding & engagement-related outfits. This is exciting for me and everybody else, because everybody likes sparkly pretty things. So of course they want me to try on all of their own jewelry whenever the subject comes up. The problem is that the women in his family have tiny hands, so I can only fit about 4 fingers through the bangles that fit them. Not being able to fit one's hand through a bangle is a kind of weird feeling, socially and body image-wise. Not because bangle-ability has anything to do with fatness, but it does have to do with size. And it's still better in this world for a girl to be small and thin than big and thin.

Luckily, my new roommate has big hands like me, and owns bangles, so I know I'm not doomed. I tried on one of hers this morning to see, and it did actually go over my hand. She said "the ones I have are pretty much the biggest size, so if that doesn't fit you might have trouble finding any." I guess I lucked out. Apparently she also has trouble finding big enough shoes in India. I wonder if I'll care much about that, or if I'll just not bother trying with Indian shoes.

the ring thing

F and I finally went ring shopping this weekend. It was really fun! I imagine having things custom-designed for you is fun in general, because people pay attention to you and try to figure out what you would like the best. Or at least that's how it should work if they're doing it right.

We came in and looked at everything in the store with the help of a very cool and enthusiastic sales girl. It took a hell of a long time to look at that much stuff, but it helped us get ideas about stuff we liked and didn't like. I think we came in hoping we'd Find Something and have rings right away, but we've got quirky preferences so that didn't happen. Then we sat down with the designer and talked about what our own rings should be like. It was awesome and fun, because we got kind of silly (I described the comet-ish shape on the final design as a "tadpole" and got a lot of shit for it).

I ended up with a ring that has a diagonal shape like this one, with two sapphires and some metal details that make a kind of comet shape. F's ring is a regular band shape, but it repeats the comet's swoopy design. They're going to be really cool and I'm excited. And I want to take my mom shopping there before I move away.

a quick note on notes

I love the invitations at this website: http://www.saimasaysdesign.com/

They do a good job of crossing the "clean modern lines" look with the "swirly Indian stuff" look. There was a middle eastern place I thought it might be nice to have the engagement at, but they didn't have a room big enough for the party. And they are specifically equipped for parties and banquets! (This could be an indication that the party is too big, but to come to that conclusion is unacceptable.) Anyway, I have been thinking that a tasty assortment of different kinds of food that the two of us like should be included in the festivities. If anybody knows of good Chicago-area veggie caterers (or extremely large restaurants), post 'em.

how about just a pony tail?

The engagement date has been set. Woo! And my brothers are excited to come to it.

But I was just reminded today that for the engagement I'll probably have to wear more makeup than I like (which is also more than F likes). And I'll have to do something with my hair, which is still not going to be long enough for the usual formal up-do stuff. I've been growing it out for a little while, since my short-hair hairdresser left town. But it's not that long yet. But it's normal for American weddings to be planned by the people getting married (especially the woman). So, what do I do? I don't want to have a "too many cooks spoil the soup" situation. But I also like that I don't have to be responsible for everything myself. On the other hand, I do have a few strong opinions about how I'd like my wedding to be. Being outdoors, for instance, is pretty important to me. Other things don't matter much at all. The difference in assumptions about who's in charge also make it harder to start planning things, because I'm not sure if I should start planning anything.

Speaking of planning, I think right now we are waiting for F's mom to get with the astrology guy and tell us when the engagement and wedding should be. Here are a few of them for your enjoyment.

LOCATION
Photos like this might help explain why I want to have an outdoor wedding. Everything looks airy and picnic-y. I also like the outfit the girl in the top picture has. She managed to avoid the massive armor plating trap. In the second photo, they've got a curtain of flower garlands along the "wall" of the wedding canopy, which I think is awesome. In the bottom two images, I like the pink-yellow-orange-red multicolor scheme. Maybe I can talk F into it.

CLOTHES
I like the blue-green borders on this wedding lehenga, and I also like how the embroidery work on it is rich without achieving the "massive armor plating" look. I dig the grid-like geometric pattern, too.

This outfit has some of the same features: blue border, geometric pattern, not armor plated. I like it too, but it definitely has a different mood than the first one. It's more old-fashioned (the designer named it the "Devdas bridal" after the movie, which was set in the early 1900s). It's not like that's not stylish, though - fashion is often strongly influenced by recent movies.

MEHENDI
Mehendi is the name for henna body painting. There's a whole party centered around the bride getting decorated with it, because after the henna goop is on she has to sit still for a long time while it stains. Somebody's gotta entertain her and feed her stuff! So all the ladies get together and keep her company. There are different styles of this, too. I like big, pseudo-floral styles with a lot of empty space, like these:

But some people prefer designs with a ton of tiny details:

Opinions? Clearly these people all had very good photographers, too. That's part of why their stuff is so pretty. But besides that, what kind of styles do you like?

engagement

I am not sure how to explain the idea of an engagement ceremony to my extended family. To them, you are engaged as soon as you tell everyone you are. Engagement parties are just to introduce you to people as a couple. You don't typically expect non-local people to travel much to come to them, and you can have as many parties as people are willing to throw for you. Or you could not have any. (You don't throw them yourself.)

But in F's family, the Engagement is more than just a party. There's a ceremony, and before that happens you're not officially engaged. You're just planning on getting married. Maybe you're pre-gaged. Engaged to be engaged. And you don't get more than one engagement. It's just the one, because it wouldn't make any sense to have the ceremony more than once.

So how do I get it across to my out-of-state aunts and uncles that they should come to this shindig, and it's a bigger deal than a few plates of hors d'ouevres and some chitchat?

maa-beti stuff

My mom is excited about my wedding and really wants to help plan it and throw parties and stuff. I worry that she might feel a little bit left out, though. The wedding is going to be Indian-style, so she doesn't know what traditional things she can boss me around about, what parties she can throw, or who she can invite to them. It is a mom's job to know all the traditions and then boss the young people around. I don't want her to be bored or left out, but I don't know these things either. Now what?

My parents also live in a different state from the city we want to have the wedding in, which is problematic. I'd say they could host a couple of the pre-wedding parties, except that that's a multi-hour drive or train ride away from the center of the action.

Then there's the clothes. Of course my mom wants to help pick out my wedding outfit. But she doesn't like the bare belly style of most lehengas. She thinks that wearing something low-cut with better coverage on the bottom would look "more formal." Indian-style fashion is just the opposite, though! Short cholis are much more OK than low necklines & bare shoulders. How do I get around this? If I try to please everybody I will be wrapped up from head to toe.

expectations

What we want: Outdoor wedding. Ideally, outdoor reception too. In the summer of 2010 so I have time to save up money after I am done with grad school. Sparkly Indian clothes. Open bar. A party with lots of music and dancing and good food, where we're married at the end.

What F's family is used to: A wedding in a banquet hall. A much shorter engagement. No drinks. Sparkly Indian clothes. Massive gold jewelry armor plating. Around 500 people, and that would be on the small side. A party with lots of music and dancing and good food, where we're married at the end.

What my extended family is used to: A wedding where I wear a white dress and pearls. Less than 200 people. Open bar. A bit o' Jesus. A party with lots of music and dancing and good food, where we're married at the end. But they are used to the music being in English.

At least we agree on something.

(I should point out that my parents are in the awesome "whatever makes you happy" camp. I'm just saying that I'm going to have to explain all the unfamiliar traditions to everybody.)

moti

In Hindi, mota/moti means fat. Hindi is a language with gender, so mota is used to decribe fat masculine people or things, and moti is used to describe fat feminine people or things. I know Hindi better than Gujarati, so a lot of my language info comes from that even though it's not actually the language F's family speaks most of the time. It is, however, the language of Bollywood movies.

In Gujarati, mota and moti still mean fat. F's mom thinks I will get moti because I like sweets so much. I probably will, too, because every time I meet new people they feed me. I had two and a half lunches yesterday. But the same words also can be used for respect purposes. For instance, in Baghban a Gujarati guy calls Amitabh Bachchan "mota bhai" (bhai means brother) even though he is very fit for an old guy.

The reason I'm telling you all this is that F has his own mom and dad, but he also has aunts and uncles that he calls Mummy and Papa, too. Some of them are called Hisname-Papa and Hername-Mummy, but F's dad's oldest brother and his wife are called Mota Papa and Moti Mummy. Mota Papa is kind of like the family's Godfather, but without all the crime.

Anyway, when I was with F's family visiting aunts and uncles yesterday, Mota Papa called to say hi. I talked to him for a little bit and then he asked for F's mom, so I handed the phone off. She asked who it was, and I said "Moti Papa." This got huge laughs from everybody else in the room. Oops. Everyone is happy that I am learning Gujarati though, so they think my mistakes are cute. Thank god.

hamari kahani so far

F (which stands for fiance) and I got engaged a couple of weeks ago. He's Indian-from-India, and I'm white-from-the-Midwest. This blog is going to contain my wedding and family adventures. I looked for advice and stories about marrying into an Indian family, but I couldn't find much at all, so this blog goes out to all you gori girls who are in the same boat. I know you're out there.

At first when we started dating, F didn't tell his family about me right away. It's just not generally done that way. Then when we were sure it was serious, he told them and they were not pleased (because I'm not Indian). In a couple of months, though, they realized I was not so bad and decided to like me. I'm not saying this is not a big deal for many people, but parents really do love their children and want them to be happy, and it seems like they usually come around eventually. In our case it was like flipping a switch - we went from unhappy parents to "When are you going to get married? How about this summer?"

We got engaged after a trip to my parents' house for a volleyball party. Everyone was calling F's phone to congratulate us, but it was languishing inside the house. They were picking on him for not answering it, but he was busy playing lots of volleyball and had no idea it was ringing. When he finally called everyone back, they all demanded pictures of me. I think they're still waiting.
